History of the North East Missouri Library Service

On October 6, 1950 the H.E. Sever Memorial Building was dedicated to its benefactor, Henry Edwin Sever.  Mr. Sever left a large sum to Kahoka for the erection of the building providing sufficient tax would be collected to support it.  In 1952, the citizens of Kahoka voted a two-mill tax for the library service, but the trustees of the Sever estate would not turn over the building fund to Kahoka until 1955 when Clark County voted a one-mill library tax and the two libraries contracted together.

With the help of the Missouri State Library, a regional library was organized in North East Missouri combining the counties of Clark, Knox, Lewis, and Schuyler.  Schuyler later separated from the others.  The headquarters were set up at the Sever Memorial Library in Kahoka.
